After 20+ years in the Navy, Mark Carroll traded manuals and protocols for a different kind of order — one you learn by observing, not managing. Scuttlebutt Farm grew out of that shift: a place where people come together to Learn, Grow, and Share the joy of living, and where the name itself comes from an old Navy tradition — the water cask sailors gathered around to swap honest, reliable stories. These watermelons were grown here, some are pink inside and some are yellow.

In late August these sweet muscadine grapes are a delicious treat, sweet raw or converted to wine or jams.

We have two mature pecan trees available for pick-your-own nuts in late fall through early winter.

Sunchokes are usually available after the first frost. Dug up, cleaned, and cooked, they make a great potato substitute that doesn't spike insulin.

We've had some good success growing garlic.

Pumpkins grown right here on the farm.

Prickly pear cactus are native to our area — here one flowers in early spring.

Comfrey is a staple of a permaculture homestead and one of our favorite plants.

This salve is made from our own comfrey — limited supply available.

Eggs are a staple of rural living. We don't maintain consistent production, but surplus may be available.

We create biochar as time and weather permit: raw wood is converted to coals, then mixed with compost or compost tea to make an amazing soil amendment.

We needed a new roof — in 2025 we had Major League Builders perform the work.
